Japanese Mend and Repair

The next thing

I was delighted to visit the Art Without Heroes exhibition at The William Morris Gallery Walthamstow, London. To see a truly wide-ranging exhibition dedicated to Japanese folk-craft. This is all feeding into my current research into Japanese ideas around mending and repair. I feel drawn to the idea of celebrating the signs of wear on clothing and textiles. The wear telling a story of how the object or garment has been used and repaired over time.

Transformed into Artwork

I’m not quite sure what will emerge from this research yet, it always takes a bit of time for ideas to bubble under. Although I have begun to produce some sample Collagraphs using book spines and also using a traditional boro boro textile colour palette. These are looking promising.
